A swimming pool is an investment. It’s not cheap to have one constructed as the average cost of an above-ground pool can be around $5,000, while an in-ground pool can reach upward of $28,000. However, adding a swimming pool to your property increases its value and gives you and your family years and years of endless fun, laughter, and memories you can cherish for a long time.
Swimming pools are typically made to last, but they require routine maintenance to keep them running well. Resurfacing helps in keeping your pool in tip-top shape, making it last for decades.
There are two main reasons why your swimming needs to be resurfaced now and then:
- Structural
Your pool’s plaster is there to act as a waterproof layer between the shell of the pool and the pool water. Older pools were made with cinder blocks and poured concrete walls, while plastered ones are typically built with gunite or shotcrete. Those materials are porous, which means water can leak through them.
The plaster is an integral part of an in-ground pool as its purpose is to keep the cement and any reinforcement steal protected from the effects of the water. If your pool has any bare spots where the gunite or shotcrete is showing, it’s time for a resurface.
Furthermore, a pool with old plaster is hard to clean through as it only increases the wear and tear of the plaster. If the plaster needs resurfacing, maintaining your pool with regular brushing and cleaning can be burdensome as the plaster will eventually come off the steps and walls and collect at the bottom of the pool. Those pieces of plaster can find their way into your filter and cause more harm to your grids and cartridges.
Should you leave the plaster as is, it will continue to deteriorate and, soon enough, cracks will appear in the structure of the pool. Once that happens, resurfacing might not be enough.
- Aesthetic
One of the major reasons why homeowners choose to resurface their swimming pool is the stain and discoloration that usually make it unsightly. As your swimming pool ages and as the plaster deteriorates, the cement starts to erode, exposing the rough surface of the original plaster structure. This traps dirt, causing the discoloration you see that makes your swimming pool look unhygienic.
Other than those two reasons, a worn-out pool isn’t just unpleasant to look at but dangerous as well. When the underlying layer of a pool is exposed, this can scuff up anyone who is swimming in it.
The frequency of resurfacing your pool will depend on the material used. Cement or plaster pools need resurfacing every 3-7 years, while vinyl pools need to be replaced every 6-12 years. Pools made with fiberglass, on the other hand, are more durable, so they can go up to 15-30 years between resurfacing.
Keep in mind that resurfacing should be done proactively. Try not to wait for cracks to show up before taking action.
