The arrival of the COVID-19 virus has changed the way many people live and work. In some cases, people are spending a lot more time at home, just because changes like a shelter in place guidance have caused many people to work at home when it’s feasible.
This also meant, however, that people have been spending a lot of time home recreationally as well, as even restaurants and movie theaters pose a health risk. For people that own swimming pools, this investment has never paid off as well as it is now. It’s important to remember that a swimming pool, like other structures on a property, will wear down over time, and that means it may need to get resurfaced. When should you do this? Here are four signs that indicate it’s time.
It’s No Longer Smooth
When a pool is in prime condition, touching the sides or the bottom should result in feeling a smooth, unbroken surface, just barely enough to get any friction or traction on. This is both safer for the swimmers and looks better for the pool.
If, however, you run your hand across the side of the pool and it feels rough and textured, it’s breaking down, and this condition will only worsen if left alone.
You see Discoloration
You can color a pool of any color or colors you like. Some people want a deep ocean blue, while others go for brighter colors. Once you start to see those colors change, it’s time to bring in the professionals. Because a pool’s colors are regularly exposed not just to water, but to salt or chlorine, these can, over time, have a corrosive effect.
That corrosive effect may eventually affect the color. Still, it’s not a strictly aesthetic side effect; this has structural consequences as well.
You see Flaking Or Peeling
Sometimes if a pool is covered by plaster, the structural damage becomes physical, and it will either flake off like dry paint or peel off. Once this starts happening, the process is only going to worsen and accelerate. Left untended, this will result in a pool that looks in poor condition.
When you start seeing physical damage on this scale, it’s time to bring in the professionals.
You See Cracks
Finally, it’s self-evident that a pool is in serious need of repair and attention if the plaster starts cracking visibly. As with all the other signs, this is a warning to the pool owner that it’s time to get a professional assessment. Ignoring cracks in the pool plaster will not make the problem go away, and in fact, things will only worsen.
With all of these signs, the same warning is always present. You can pay less to have an issue addressed when it’s small and manageable, or you can ignore it until it becomes a much larger, more expensive problem to solve.
