Refinishing Process
The Workplace
Proper workplace preparation sets the tone for the entire project. A powerful ventilation system is put into place to vent fumes to the outside. The area surrounding the fixture is masked to prevent over-spray from getting on other surfaces.
Preparation
This is one of the most important parts of the process. The surface needs to be properly prepared so the topcoat will permanently adhere to the fixture. Shoddy preparation can lead to a surface that peels.
Repairs
Any required repairs are made. This can include small cracks, dents, scratches, rust or burns. Yes, people used to smoke in the bathtub!
Topcoat
Finally the topcoat is applied with a professional grade spray gun; this isn’t a hobby model! Our skilled technicians, mean the resulting finish will be durable, lasting and free of drips or streaks.
Choosing A Refinisher?
It’s not always easy finding a competent refinisher. A poor decision could leave you unhappy in a year or two. Many customers call us because their previously refinished tubs are peeling or are streaked. In most cases these surfaces were not prepared correctly or were produced with inferior materials. Here are some qualities to consider when looking for a professional refinisher:
Experience
Look for a least 5 years’ experience refinishing. Ask for referrals and check them. If a previous customer was happy, there is a better chance you will be as well.
Quality Materials
Quality materials can make the difference between a refinishing job that works, and one that doesn’t. Second-rate materials may save $50 – $75 on a tub, but there is a good chance the end result will suffer. Poor quality materials have a tendency to chip or even peel.
Many people call us who saved a buck or two but were faced with having the piece refinished in a year. A tub that has been refinished with good quality materials should provide 10 -15 years of useful life if properly maintained.
Workspace Preparation
Overspray prevention and proper ventilation are critical for a successful outcome. Overspray occurs when droplets of coating finds their way onto your walls. This may not be a problem if the coating and the walls are white, but any other combination and the problem will stick out like a sore thumb.
Make sure your technician thoroughly masks the walls and other fixtures. Ventilation is very important for both you and the operator. Some companies use a box fan in a window; this is not good enough! Top-notch companies will ventilate the area with a clean air system that pulls air to the outside. This will keep your home relatively odor free.
